Brianna stared at the little folded square of paper. It was notebook paper, torn on one side, smudged with dirt and fingerprints. Worn edges from folding and unfolding. A smudgy tint from being written on, erased, then rewritten on and re-erased. She unfolded it again, although she already knew the words by heart. Quickly rereading the cramped, scrawling handwriting, her chest ached. Dekka had given it to her. She had left it under Brianna's door, with no name. But their was no doubt it was from Dekka.
"This girl, She runs, Runs from trouble, To trouble, This girl, She fights, Fights herself, Fights others, This girl, She steals, Steals my breath, Steals my heart."
Brianna knew Jack hadn't written it. He was too...Jack. Dekka, however. Dekka wrote this, without a doubt. Brianna stared at it. It had to stop. She was straight. Dekka hadn't taken the subtle hints, so now...now it was time to let her down hard. Brianna ran to the main area of the lake colony. There were a few kids roasting fish. A few more were talking to them. Brianna walked next to the fire. "Hey Breeze!" called one kid. Out of the corner of her eye, Brianna could see Dekka staring at her, with a gaze of curiosity and respect. "What's that?" the same kid asked. Everyone was staring at her. "Nothing" Brianna muttered, stepping closer to the huge fire pit. She pulled out the paper, unfolding it. Brianna held the paper up. Dekka stiffened. Crumpling it loudly, she threw it in the fire. She stared blankly as it burned slowly, the words turning to ash. She held back a sob. "It was nothing. Absolutely nothing," Brianna stated, staring at Dekka. Brianna turned, blurring away. Her feet flew as she sobbed, tears burning her eyes, as the expression on Dekka's face burned in her memory. It was just a poem. But, it was so much more.
